R2R : Route to Resolution
Grant: £20,000
November 9, 2016
This project is to establishment an interactive guided pathway website for employees and employers, providing a one-stop-shop workplace ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) Service (called Route to Resolution – R2R). The employee /employer will provide information (through separate portals) in response to key questions. Accessible information will be provided about employment law and definitions to help the user answer questions and understand their position.
Help will be available (if necessary) for inputting information. The details provided will enable a lawyer to advise the user more efficiently about their rights and obligations. The website will include legal, practical and strategic information about how best to negotiate in a variety of situations, based on YESS’s experience. This should enable some users to negotiate themselves with minimal or no input from a lawyer.

Delivering maternity rights information through apps and email-based notification
Grant: £57,450
November 9, 2016
The project will develop ‘just in time’ information for pregnant women on maternity rights at work, to be delivered through pregnancy-related apps and email notification services. Written and video materials suitable for inclusion in the Baby Buddy app and written materials suitable for inclusion in Public Health England’s Start4Life email notification service will be produced. Partnerships with other apps and email services will also be explored.
Pregnancy discrimination is widespread and increasing. Government research found that 11% of pregnant women lose their jobs because of discrimination. Only 3% of these women pursue a grievance and fewer than 1% take their claim to the employment tribunal. Lack of knowledge about rights is a factor in women choosing not to take action.
The resources will be informed by Maternity Action's 2016 report, "Use of apps to deliver maternity rights information: scoping report", which includes a literature review and data from focus groups and stakeholder interviews. The resources will be piloted prior to release. The resources will be fully evaluated and learning will inform future projects to build legal capability. Maternity Action is well-positioned to undertake video work as they are currently completing three videos on pregnancy discrimination, focusing on sickness and health and safety.

LEDLET Summer Scheme 2017
Grant: £5,500
November 9, 2016
In July every year, LEDLET invites ten lower-sixth-form students from across Wales to spend a week in legal London undertaking legal work experience and receiving careers advice. The students are selected according to merit and means, with priority given to those from particularly underprivileged backgrounds and disadvantaged areas – factors the application form helps identify. Each applicant is profiled according to socio-economic demographic data. Lower-sixth students are targeted in order to influence their selection of universities and degree courses in advance of the oncoming autumn term.
Each student spends a day with a barrister, a day with a solicitor and a day sitting with a judge at the Old Bailey. On their last morning, they receive guidance on university applications from admissions tutors at University College London. In the evening they meet Welsh law students and lawyers, and participate in moots and educational events, which are modified each year according to feedback from the previous year’s students.
The entirety of their travel, meals and accommodation is funded by LEDLET. Bursaries are made available to those who do not own a suit and cannot afford to buy their own.

Patients' Rights Care Pathway
Grant: £15,000
November 9, 2016
Individuals admitted to hospital with a mental illness, informally or detained, are often unaware of their human rights and rights under mental health law. An infographic patients’ rights care pathway for adult acute psychiatric care is being developed. A report evaluating this and highlighting good practice using the pathway will be published. This will support staff to recognise critical points to ensure patients are informed about and afforded specific rights.
Consultation involving service users, carers and staff has provided a wealth of information to help formulate a pathway identifying key rights from admission to discharge.
This funding is to produce short videos to promote systems and behavioural change in acute wards. The videos will be widely available via the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland website and partner organisations. Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland will also promote their use direct to staff during their regular visits to acute wards across Scotland.
